Mizoram University was established by an Act of Parliament (No. 8 of 2000) and became operational on 2nd July, 2001. Located on the outskirts of Aizawl, the capital city of Mizoram, the university spreads over 978.1988 acres. Before becoming an independent institution, it functioned as the Mizoram Campus of the North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Shillong, and was led by a Pro-Vice Chancellor. At that time, the campus comprised seven postgraduate departments: Economics, Education, English, Forestry, Mizo, Psychology, and Public Administration. Over the last 22 years, Mizoram University has achieved significant growth in infrastructure, academic programs, manpower, and support services.
The university earned an ‘A’ grade accreditation from NAAC in 2014 and 2019 and further upgraded to A+ in 2025. It also obtained ISO Certification in 2018. Consistently recognized among India’s top institutions, Mizoram University secured positions within the top 100 universities from 2016 to 2023 as per the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) by MHRD. In the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings 2022, it secured the 1st rank in the North-East region of India. Additionally, it was ranked 1st among central universities in the North-East region by achieving the 13th position in the Indian Institutional Ranking Framework (IIRF) 2023’s Top 20 Central Universities category. Its NIRF rankings were 76th in 2023 and 77th in 2024.
Currently, Mizoram University has 39 active academic departments offering undergraduate, postgraduate, and Ph.D. programs organized under 10 Schools of Study. It includes 40 affiliated colleges and one constituent college. It is among India’s pioneering universities, having successfully implemented the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) since 2013. Aligning with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the university is progressing towards providing broad-based, multidisciplinary, and holistic educational programs at both UG and PG levels.
The campus was awarded Grade ‘A’ by the Mizoram State Pollution Control Board following a Green Audit conducted in March-April 2013. Mizoram University is recognized as an eco-friendly institution and is one of the earliest universities in India to effectively operate using solar energy. Academic buildings, hostels, administrative blocks, and campus streetlights are powered by solar photovoltaic plants. The university campus provides inclusive facilities such as wheelchair ramps in all buildings and disabled-friendly washrooms in hostels for students and staff who are disabled or visually challenged.
Students and faculty actively participate in extension activities through organizations such as the Red Ribbon Club, Techno Club, NSS, and SPIC MACAY-Heritage Club. Many members of the university community also engage in various forms of social service, some integrated within their curriculum.
Since its inception, Mizoram University has encouraged active student participation in sports and cultural events. It has a dedicated Sports Department with professional coaching staff, enabling students to compete annually in the East Zone Inter-University Sports and the All India Inter-University Sports events.
The university campus is about an hour’s drive from Aizawl city center, and the institution provides highly subsidized transportation services. Aizawl is well-connected by air with Kolkata, Guwahati, and Imphal, and by road with Silchar, Guwahati, Shillong, among others. The nearest railway station is at Silchar. Mizoram enjoys a pleasant climate, generally cool in summer and moderately cold in winter, with temperatures ranging from 11°C to 21°C during winters and 20°C to 29°C in summers. Known for its natural beauty, Mizoram is rich in flora and fauna, enhancing the appeal of the university’s scenic campus.
